He’s like a bearded, balding alt-rock antihero, revealing a pale chest and sizable beer gut when he takes off his shirt. Those experiencing Stepdad for the first time on their full-length debut, Wildlife Pop, might not get the full experience, but that’s okay. The music is multi-layered and addictive, and it speaks for itself. Hailing from Grand Rapids, Stepdad has had quite the ascent.

Their video for “My Leather, My Fur, My Nails”, from their first EP, Ordinaire, garnered some 300,000 views on YouTube. “She wants a coat made of my leather, my fur, and my nails,” Tafel sings in a pitch-perfect falsetto croon. It’s weird, to be sure, but at least it’s honest. There’s no agenda here.

“My Leather, My Fur, My Nails” isn’t the only track from Ordinaire to reappear on Wildlife Pop. “Jungles” overcomes its intentional campiness to become a stunner, incorporating a tribal beat and multiple layers of Tafel’s voice. “We belong to places/strong and brave, courageous/our tiger faces,” he sings, a line that will lodge in your ears like a shard of candy you just can’t work free from your teeth. While some bands have trouble merging new material with old, there’s no problem here. Frenzied “Must Land Running”, the opening track, opens a neon-colored, pixilated door to the rest of the album.

No matter how weird the lyric or multi-layered the synth, Tafel and co. Are still masters of the organic.

Wildlife Pop is as apt a title as one could imagine, invoking bubblegum trifles with a dash of the unexpected. Stepdad are going places: Their record label, Black Bell, is a subsidiary of Warner Brothers, and they’ve landed a spot on the Vans Warped Tour, whatever that means today. We can only hope that they don’t lose their sense of humor– and that Tafel never loses his silver pants and faux fur cape. Essential tracks: “Must Land Running”, “My Leather, My Fur, My Nails”, and “Jungles”.
